North West Window

This is a five lancet light window of diamond leaded clear glass. There are a number of smaller glazed panels between the stone tracery at the head of the window.

There are open joints and severely cracked stones in the tracery caused by corroding dowels within the stone units. The tracery has to be removed and rebuilt with stainless steel pins and a substantial rebuild of all the leaded glazing sheets. The original materials will be used wherever possible.

Before launching appeals to fund these repairs we need to have a clear idea of the cost. This can only be achieved by preparing detailed specifications and putting them out to tender. John Coward’s architects fees, for this work are quoted as £2,660 and WML
Consulting, Stonemasons, £750, both excluding VAT which would be charged so the anticipated budget is £5,000. FOSL needs to raise this money before we can proceed with the project.

Tower Window

This is a four lancet window with stained glass panels illustrating the Nativity, Baptism in the Jordan, Jesus blessing children and The Good Shepherd. They were built by Henry Hughes of London in 1890 and dedicated by the then Rector, Canon Master.

The two inner lancets were rebuilt in 1898 but the outer pair are bowed and leaking. Water is seeping on to the stained glass which is losing colour and definition as a result. Both lancets need rebuilding if serious damage is to be avoided. The budget for this part of the project is £10,500 based on estimates provided by Pendle Stained Glass; details are as follows.

St Laurence’s Church is situated in the centre of Chorley. It is believed that there has been a Church on that site since Anglo Saxon times. St Laurence’s is a unique link with the past providing a vital sense of continuity and local identity.
