Visit St Laurence's
Visitors are always welcome at St Laurence's
The Church is notable for its atmosphere, not surprising when one remembers that worship has been taking place on this site for over 500 years. There was a major rebuild in 1859 – 61 and further alterations in 1913 – 14 and in 1995 the interior was re-modelled to provide a modern worship space with pew arranged around it. The magnificent corona which overhangs the altar in front of the screen was installed and the refectory added to the building. This has proved a great success in creating a warm and friendly atmosphere without sacrificing a sense of reference. This truly is a family church. Other features include two medieval fonts, the Standish family pew now moved from its original position and two mysterious helmets from the Civil War era; no one knows their origin. Many members of the Standish family and other manorial families are buried under the chancel bearing witness to the crucial role these buildings have played in the history of our town.
The Church is open on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 9.15 to 14.15. On Tuesdays and Fridays the Refectory is open from 10.00 to 1.00 serving a wide range of hot and cold food and drinks. On Mondays there is an open table, for the homeless and others in need, from 17.30 to 18.30. If you wish to visit “out of hours” you can telephone the Parish Office on 01257 231360 and make arrangements.
Regular Sunday Services are held at 8.00 (Holy Communion) and 10.00 (Parish Eucharist), and there many additional services to mark feast days and other special occasion; to find out more go to the St Laurence Today section on this web site.
While Christian worship is and always will be the primary function of the Church there is room for a wide range of secular activities including concerts, theatrical performances, meetings and reunions. One of the Friends of St Laurence's main objectives is to broaden the use of the buildings and facilities and expand the role of the Church as an asset for use by the entire local community. This was the very much the case in the past and we hope to reinvigorate this aspect of our activities by improving the facilities and developing partnerships with local organisations and affinity groups. In addition to the Church we can offer a Refectory with catering facilities, a large conference room suitable for choirs and concert practice and a smaller meeting room. Anyone wishing to explore the possibilities should contact us via this web site or contact the Bookings Officer on 01257 261360 or at [email protected]
